Police are on the lookout for MLC Rakesh Yadav who is accused of leading the group of SP workers. Sources said the BJP government was mulling charges under provisions of the National Security Act against him. The four persons who were detained on Friday have been identified as Manoj Pandit Guddu Yadav Upender Yadav and Anshu Thakur. They were formally arrested and sent to jail on Saturday said HN Singh SSP Ghaziabad. Efforts are on to nab the prime accused Rakesh Yadav. We are trying to identify the people involved in the case through pictures that have appeared in the media and social networking sites he added. Asked if the police were planning to charge Yadav under provisions of the NSA Singh said: An investigation is on and depending on the situation a final call on this matter will be taken. Sources however maintained the administration was exploring options of using the NSA against Yadav. The state government has taken a serious note of the matter and the administration has been instructed to deal with the accused with a firm hand. Against such a backdrop we are holding talks if the NSA should be slapped on the prime accused or not said a police source.
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has deputed the party s vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda to meet RJD supremo Lalu Prasad in Ranchi jail and his son Tejashwi Yadav in Patna next week to send across a message of larger opposition unity against the BJP. Nanda confirmed to ET that he would be travelling to Ranchi on Monday to meet Prasad in jail and later go to Patna to congratulate Tejashwi Yadav on the big wins in Bihar bypolls. I will carry a larger message of opposition unity to Lalu ji and Tejashwi on the behalf of Akhilesh Yadav. We are like-minded parties and RJD has notched up good wins in Bihar like the SP in UP in the recent bypolls Nanda told ET. This is significant as the SP had not become a part of the erstwhile Mahagathbandan (grand alliance) of RJD JDU and Congress in the 2015 assembly elections and had contested the polls separately supposedly as it was not promised enough seats. Tejashwi Yadav and SP s Ram Gopal Yadav were both present along with other opposition leaders at Sonia Gandhi s dinner on Tuesday. This adds to the talk of a broader anti-BJP alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. SP in the recent past has been critical of BJP framing its political opponents in false cases. Former JDU president Sharad Yadav who rebelled against Nitish Kumar for re-aligning forces with the BJP has also been in touch with both Lalu Prasad and Akhilesh Yadav. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections the Samajwadi Party could win only five out of 80 seats while the BJP and its allies won 73. The remaining two were won by the Congress. The results indicate that the winds of change are blowing and the future election of Lok Sabha would be different he said. However he refused to comment on whether the alliance with the BSP would continue for the general elections scheduled for next year. This will be decided by Akhilesh Yadav and behen Mayawati. I cannot comment on this he said. The BJP s defeat has renewed the vigour in the opposition camp and many leaders are now openly advocating formation of a grand alliance for 2019.
Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh unit chief of the Samajwadi Party (SP) Naresh Uttam has written to the Election Commission (EC) alleging large-scale irregularities in the ongoing counting of votes for the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat.In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh a copy of which was also sent to the Chief Election Commissioner of India the SP leader alleged massive irregularities in the counting of votes and urged the EC to take immediate steps in this regard.The district administration under pressure from the chief minister was out to somehow ensure the victory of the BJP candidate...if the BJP managed to win from Gorakhpur the people would lose faith in the EC Uttam said.He further alleged that as soon as the counting began the police lathicharged the people and chased them away to ensure that there was no one outside the counting centre and the district magistrate who is also the district election officer removed the SP agents from the counting centre. CommentsAccording to an official at the end of the 14th round of counting Praveen Nishad of the SP was leading by 19 201 votes in Gorakhpur over his nearest BJP rival.Gorakhpur is a stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who has represented the seat in the Lok Sabha for five terms. The bypoll in Gorakhpur was necessitated after Adityanath vacated the seat to enter the state Legislative Council.
New Delhi: SP s victory in UP by-elections with BSP s support may provide fresh energy to the moves for opposition unity but a broader alliance between the two traditional rivals from India s most populous state may still be a long way away. However wresting of two Lok Sabha seats that were vacated by the current state CM and his deputy suggests that SP s political understanding with BSP has worked at the ground level. BSP did not field its candidates in the bypolls but suddenly came into the focus announcing support to the SP candidate almost unexpectedly and with just a week to go for the polls. The party s local units immediately swung into action and started working to divert its votes in favour of the SP candidates. That boosted the SP campaign as well. Sources in BSP said its local units had brought to the notice of the leadership the prevailing disappointment among the cadre after the party s poor performance in the 2017 assembly polls. This is the time for the party coordinators to look for BSP candidates in every Lok Sabha seat. So it was necessary for BSP to send out a positive message on its intention to provide a serious alternative to BJP said one of them explaining the decision to back SP candidates in the by-elections. And SP s selection of candidates made it easier. The presence of a member of the Nishad community among the most backward castes as the SP nominee in Gorakhpur suited BSP s political interest. It was also comfortable supporting a Patel candidate in Phulpur a source said. In Gorakhpur BJP faced a direct contest with SP. Nishads have considerable presence in this constituency and both SP and BSP are trying to woo them. SP candidate Pravin Nishad is the son of Sanjay Nishad who is the president of the Nishad party. Sources in BSP said they however didn t see the by-election results as a perfect sign for an alliance between the parties. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has deputed Vice President Kiranmoy Nanda to visit Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in Ranchi on Monday where he has been imprisoned in a fodder scam case The Economic Times reported on Saturday. Nanda will also meet Lalu Yadav s son Tejashwi Yadav in Patna.Nanda told The Economic Times that he would visit Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav to urge for Opposition unity against the Bharatiya Janata Party .
