A look at some dysfunctional and toxic families in literature

Here are some dysfunctional families which are beautifully written and deserve acknowledgement. Dursley family from Harry Potter by J K Rowling Harry Potter made us fall in love with the world of wizardry and magic. It painted such a vivid picture in the reader's mind that it became difficult to admire humans or 'Muggle' (as they are referred to in the book), with the Dursley's adding to the dislike. The family of Harry's maternal aunt, with whom he used to stay as a child, treated him badly. However, it was no secret that the family itself was undergoing turmoil. Thanks to Harry's jealous aunt Petunia and the ever whining and greedy brother Dudley, things were never right for the family, and of course, Harry. Petunia envies Harry's dead mother because she was a great magician, and Dudley couldn't stand the attention Harry received from the world. Charlotte fancied herself to become a lady of European sophistication and elegance, while her husband and daughter Lolita, were dealing with their own set of problems. Charlotte's relationship with Lolita is strained throughout the novel, but worships her husband Humbert (who in fact secretly admires Lolita). Right from Cersei carrying his brother Jamie's children, to Tyrion killing his father Tywin because he never loved his son because of his appearance - the whole family was followed no social norms and was ready to even take each other's lives for the much-proclaimed iron throne. Money talk: Creating a robust health coverage of Rs 50 lakh

Anyone may need hospitalisation or suffer from a serious illness that requires prolonged treatment. Therefore, it's necessary to not just have health coverage but also scale up it meaningfully to tackle inflation. This is for your peace of mind. The tax savings are just a useful byproduct. START WITH BASIC COVERAGE The key to large health coverage is to first lock in your basic coverage. This coverage can be Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh if you are in your 20s and 30s. For individuals, this would be easy on the pocket. Assuming you are a 30-year-old male with no tobacco habit, you can avail a cover of `5 lakh with annual premiums ranging from Rs 5,300 upwards. A cover of Rs 10 lakh for the same person would cost upw-ards of Rs 7,400 per annum. Note that such a coverage should be separate from your employer-provided health insurance. Such coverage is no doubt useful but may have limitations such as inadequate sum assured and the prospect of losing coverage once your employment ends. Therefore, one must always own a retail health plan that can be selected as per one's unique needs and can be continued for a lifetime. It's also important to get this coverage while you're young. As you get older, the premium costs rise as well as your chances of your health risks. GET A TOP-UP Now that you have base coverage, you can consider using top-up plans to expand your total coverage. This will protect your finances against even extremely serious health episodes that have the potential to your family's finances. For example, the treatment of serious, metastasized cancer at private hospitals in India can easily run upwards of Rs 20 lakh. This is where a top-up can substantially extend your coverage without pinching your pockets too hard. Let's say you had a base cover of Rs 10 lakh and you're seeking to extend the coverage to Rs 50 lakh. You can avail a top-up of Rs 40 lakh. Interestingly, with a deductible of Rs 10 lakh, this additional coverage of Rs 40 lakh will cost you upwards of Rs 8,200 per annum. HOW A DEDUCTIBLE WORKS Deductible is what you pay by yourself before your health insurance pays for you. For example, you have a health insurance policy of Rs 50 lakh with a deductible of Rs 10 lakh. You have a hospitalisation that costs you Rs 25 lakh. Here, the first Rs 10 lakh need to be borne by you — either out of pocket or by your base health covers. The remaining Rs 15 lakh can be borne by your top-up plan. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOP-UP & SUPER TOP-UP A super top-up health insurance plan covers your hospital expenses in full over and above the threshold of your normal health insurance plan. Unlike a top-up health insurance plan, that covers only a single hospitalisation cost exceeding your regular health insurance threshold, the super top-up health insurance plan covers multiple hospital bills. Let's understand this with an example. Let's say your basic health insurance has a cover of Rs 5 lakh. Apart from this, you have a choice: you can take a top-up or a super top-up both with a cover of Rs 10 lakh with a deductible of Rs 5 lakh. Let's say your hospitalisation bill is Rs 9 lakh. So your basic cover will pay Rs 5 lakh. The top-up and your super top-up can both cover the remaining cost of Rs 4 lakh. Let's say you have been hospitalised thrice in a year with bills amounting to Rs 9 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2 lakh. Your base plan provides Rs 5 lakh for the first hospitalisation and is exhausted thereafter. Your top-up provides Rs 4 lakh in the first, and no coverage in the next two hospitalisations because in any claim, the coverage kicks in only after the threshold of Rs 5 lakh. However, your super top-up provides Rs 4 lakh in the first, Rs 2 lakh in the second, and Rs 2 lakh in the second. Keep these features of the super top-up plan handy and proceed to sign up for a plan that best suits you. Remember compromising on today's premiums may not prove to be beneficial tomorrow! ... Lok Sabha elections 2019: INLD nominee faces uphill task in Ambala

Balmiki faces an uphill task as the INLD has never won the Ambala parliamentary seat. There are nine assembly segments in Ambala constituency —Ambala city, Ambala Cantonment, Mullana(SC), Naraingarh , Panchkula , Kalka, Sadhaura (SC), Jagadhri and Yamunanagar. All nine seats were won by the BJP in 2014 assembly elections. In the Lok Sabha polls in 2014, the INLD's Kusum Sherwal polled 1.29 lakh votes in Ambala and lost her security deposit. Sherwal has now switched over to the Jannayak Janata Party. Talking to HT, Balmiki said he was ready to take on both Kataria and Selja. 'They have done nothing for the constituency where roads are damaged. There is a lack of good government schools, colleges and hospitals. I am getting support from all sections of society.' MOLESTATION charge In his affidavit submitted to the returning officer while filing his nomination papers, Balmiki mentioned that he was booked under Sections 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-B (assault) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in 2017. PM's speech indicates horse-trading, cancel his nomination: TMC to EC

"We would like to bring to your kind notice the lies uttered by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister regarding horse trading, hinting that the members of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) will cross over to the Bharatiya Janata Party and using this lie to influence the voters," a letter from the party to the EC said. The TMC said it is "shocked and surprised" to hear the utterances of the Prime Minister that 40 AITC MLAs are in touch with him and will cross over to BJP after declaration of results of Lok Sabha election. 40 TMC MLAs in touch with me, will cross over after I win polls: Modi "You (EC) are thus requested to ask Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister for evidence in support of his statement, failing which his nomination should be cancelled for violation of the Model Code of Conduct by making such provocative and undemocratic statements," the letter said. The TMC said it is very "unbecoming" of the Prime Minister as he is trying to influence the voters to vote for BJP, by creating a mala fide impression in their minds that many MLAs of AITC are in touch with him and will cross over to his party. The party also lodged a strong protest against the "mischievous" campaign of Modi. "Moreover, this tone of speech is very likely to create an indication of impending horse-trading related to election. We demand that the EC take cognizance of this unfounded, inappropriate and illegal campaign and utterances of Narendra Modi and take strong action against him as per rules," the letter said. Alleging that the BJP's campaign has been "appalling", the TMC claimed that the leaders and members of the party in power at the Centre have shown no regard or respect for the Model Code of Conduct or the guidelines issued by the EC. "Initially, the leaders of BJP tried to seek votes by appealing to the people in the name of the martyrs of the Pulwama attacks. The leaders even attempted to dissuade the electors against other parties by using the same propaganda. "Thereafter, they tried to use religion to persuade the voters. Now, they are hinting at horse trading and how the opposition parties are making arrangements with BJP for the 2019 General Elections," the party alleged. ... UAE birth certificate for interfaith baby

I have an Abu Dhabi visa. I get my insurance coverage there and got my wife admitted to Medeor 24X7 Hospital in the emirate. But after the baby's delivery, the birth certificate was rejected as I am a Hindu," Babu said."I then applied for a no-objection certificate through the court. The trial went on for four months but my case was rejected," he added.Babu said that since his daughter had no legal documents, he pinned his hopes on the amnesty period. The UAE has declared 2019 as the Year of Tolerance to highlight UAE as an exemplary example of a tolerant nation, bridging the communication gap between different cultures and build an environment where people accept each other as they are."Those days were stressful and the amnesty was a window of hope. The Indian Embassy helped with the provision of an outpass. But the baby was denied immigration clearance as there was no data or registration number to prove her birth," he said.Babu said that Indian embassy counsellor M. Rajamurugan supported them throughout the process. "The judicial department made my case an exception. I was told that from now on, in such cases, we have to put together a request letter, get it approved by the chief justice, and take it to the health authority for the issuance of a birth certificate," he said.Babu again went to court and, this time, his case was approved. The couple was given the birth certificate of their daughter Anamta Aceline Kiran on April 14, a day before the Hindu festival of Vishu."I am told that this is the first case where the rule has been amended," he said. Rajamurugan said the ground-breaking ruling from the court will serve as a precedent for future cases. Being Baba: Let's make nursing in public comfortable for new mothers

Oh and obviously the feeding isn't something one can do when one feels like it. The baby is the boss. When he or she is hungry.you must feed them. With all this said, we faced something hundreds and thousands of mothers face every day in our country - how does one nurse their baby comfortably when they're out of home? Most families start going out with their baby possibly a month or two after they're born. Maybe to a family event, maybe even outstation or even something as simple as going to the mall - and when you're out most mothers are constantly worried about one thing. Will I find a safe and clean place to feed my baby? While I get the clean part, the first part is what started bothering me a lot. When mothers think safe.they think, can I find a place where I won't have people staring at me or harassing me? Can I find a place where someone won't come and tell me to 'cover up'? What would people think if I had to feed my baby in a mall or in a bus or the train or at someone's place? Would I be okay taking my breast out to feed my child in a public place? All these questions stem from our cultural problem our society has. Women are expected to be dressed modestly and while movies and music videos are cool with women pretty much baring their breasts for entertainment, a breast for feeding is considered improper or even 'yucky'. And of course we have a society that tends to blame women and hold them responsible for pretty much anything that happens to them. So whether a girl gets molested for the clothes she wears or for feeding her child in public, the society tends to point a finger at the woman for the actions. In such cases, for many women it becomes very difficult to contemplate feeding their child in public. So yes, when we had Neil we started looking for things we had not looked at before. Does a mall we want to visit have a feeding and changing room for babies, does an airport have good facilities for doing the same, if we go to a shop will they have a room where we could feed the baby.if we go to a relative's place, do they have a separate room where he could be fed? And after everything, we just realised that it is almost impossible to find the resources in every place you go to but that obviously doesn't mean that we can leave our son hungry when he needs a feed or that we stay at home at all times and hence came in our lives a concept called NIP - or nursing in public - and here are a few things that we did that could maybe help you. Find clothes that are nursing friendly. There are a lot of wonderful brands that make maternity and feeding nursing wear. Nursing wear looks good and is extremely functional when it comes to feeding your little one. · Have nursing stoles or scarves that you can carry with you to cover your baby and give both you and your child some privacy. · Find a baby carrier that can help you with feeding in public. · Educate your family and friends and create a support structure that will encourage and help you to do something that is essential and natural. · But most importantly, change your mindset. Recognise that all malls, shops, taxis, buses, trains, airports, etc, will not always have a place designated for feeding but you will have to feed your child. While the breast has been largely sexualised, recognise that it is also, more importantly, your child's primary food source. And the more breast milk you give your child the healthier and happier he or she will be. In our case, Neha was exclusively breastfeeding Neil for six months and even now, two months after we've slowly started baby-led weaning, breast milk is still his primary source of nutrition and will be for a while. EBF (Exclusive Breast Feeding) is fantastic for your child, please read up about it or join groups on Facebook that can educate you on the importance of breastfeeding like Breastfeeding Support For Indian Mothers (@BSIMORG) which was immensely helpful for us and you will find so many questions you may have about breastfeeding answered for you by peers and experts who've been through what you're going through. So yes.whether you like it or not, there will be occasions where feeding in public will happen. So equip yourself for it, prepare yourself mentally and go ahead and do it! You can also look up the World Health Organization (WHO) website to get started on your education about EBF. I would like to end this by addressing our government through this forum. Create legislation enabling breastfeeding in public, create shelters or space where mothers feel safe to feed their babies and have these shelters everywhere. Make it so that every large public place must have areas designated for mothers and babies. We have over a billion people in our country and we have thousands of women who have babies literally every day. Let's show them the love and respect that we ought to and make breastfeeding stigma free and a joy for our mothers. Please educate mothers and make sure they know that literally nothing is better for their babies than their own breast milk. Like Neha recently posted on social media, let's make sure that every baby can say that 'B**bs is the secret of my energy!' 'Bene' there, done that the Italian way

Bene sits atop of the Sheraton Grand at the Brigade Gateway fourth floor, with a beautiful outside gazebo seating, and swanky interiors. The perfect place for a lavish meal. From their handsome bar at the centre came a fruity-teneted Mistletoe, a cocktail with vodka, cranberry and triple sec. Refreshing for the summer was the Aperol Spritz, a bubbly cocktail made with Aperol and Soda. The in-house bakery's bread basket came with a medley of freshly baked wonders that we dipped into olive oil and balsamic with glee, and also with pomodoro, sundried tomato and cheese dips… till the elegant amuse bouche sauntered to our table. A small crisp dumpling of pizza dough with pesto, delish. The La Fruttarola salad with lollo rosso, walnuts, groundnuts with pear and apple was perfect and subtle and the zuppa de pomodoro with stracciata cheese was alright, the croutons were too mushy. For the next course came the chef's favourite tortellini, with a duck meat filling and parmesan cheese. We loved the play of pulled duck meat in a pasta with that delicious creamy parmesan, though the tortellini was a bit too tough. The scallapino di polo, a chicken breast with mushroom sauce and a delicious mash came next, the breast was too dry, surprisingly. And it could have been more flavourful. We loved the vegetable lasagna which Chef Apa regaled about being a dish that is a grandmother's meal favourite… not found in restaurants at all. It was delicious, with mushroom, and fresh and crusty at the ends. The Pasta Caprese stuffed with burrata cheese was perfect… soft parcels filled with gooey cheese with a play of flavours - tomato, basil with leeks. Very good. The woodfire oven at Bene is a must-order exercise, and we had the yummiest pepperoni pizza with gooey mozzarella, crispy thinnest of thin slices of pepperoni with a sauce that had just the right tang and taste. Must-must-have! The tortellini and its doughy toughness was disappointing as the flavours were wonderful, also as handmade pasta usually melts in the mouth. The chicken could have been juicier too. Especially since the chef is a veritable pro of Italian classics. The masala chai-loving chef has had stints across the world, in Shanghai, at Monte Carlo on a private yacht and a few Michelin star restaurants, so he has the leanings of a perfectionist. Apa then went back to his chopping board, to study at Gualtiero Marchesi (the father of Italian cuisine) Academy where seasoned chef hone their skill. The menu sees Apa's love for seafood, and classical dishes like a puttanesca, carbonara or a simple risotto. 'I change the menu every three to four months, as a business hotel, we have people who spend long stints here. Every menu is a study, this one is based on tradition and classics. A tour around Italy with wholesome recipes from the regions. The leaning is towards the northern regions that have a rich repertoire which Indians like, and a few dishes from the south,' says chef Apa who respects classics implicitly, and has incorporated techniques learnt through his career. Apa's Tiramisu is seeped in tradition too and fantastic. The versions we've had earlier across the city fade in comparison… The others have too much emphasis on the liquor, cocoa and cake. This was perfect. The most delectable, creamy mascarpone with dollops of cake, hints of cocoa, and liquor. Delectable. The chef who busts some myths about Italian food, especially for those asking for pink or white sauce, which Apa says is non-existent in Italian cuisine. On the job changing 90 per cent of the menu frequently, Roberto is ready to dish out potions of Italian… and the menu is replete with myriad options. Some more flourish and finish would definitely add much more to Bene. With a chef who's heart and soul is Italian to the core. ... High-end fashion trumps jewellery spending in 2018

Electronics sales in Hyderabad have seen a rise, with spends-share growing from 16 per cent (2013) to 52 per cent (2018). "India's luxury market continues to grow with consumer behaviour maturing in the last five years," Manoj Adlakha, CEO, American Express India, said in a statement on Monday. "While jewellery spending dominated the category till 2013, we have seen other segments - including electronic and high-end fashion grow in share, and even surpass jewellery spends in certain markets," he added. Further, the report found that Kolkata and Chennai have emerged as new centres of luxury consumption Chennai witnessing a 65 per cent rise in luxury spend from 2017 to 2018, and luxury spending in Kolkata doubling from 2013 to 2018, than Delhi, Mumbai and Benguluru. In cities such as Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Udaipur, luxury retail spend share increased from 9 per cent to 59 per cent between 2013-2018. "With nearly 70 per cent of luxury spending in India contributed at top 15 per cent of merchants, there is a huge opportunity for retailers and local high-end merchants to understand customer demand and preferences, and tap into their aspirations," Adlakha added. The report gives an insight into the shifting trends of luxury spending in India, and the emerging pockets of affluence beyond the three metros. It covers transactions and spend volumes at over 600 merchants finds jewellery, electronics, high-end fashion (apparel and accessories) and luxury retail to be the top categories of engagement for Indian affluents. Lost tango in Delhi: the AAP-Congress imbroglio

t wasn't just political leaders who sought this alliance. Aware of the symbolic significance of the national capital in the political imagination of the country, many ordinary citizens, too, desired such a tie-up. An AAP-Congress alliance had the potential to defeat the BJP in a majority of the seats in the city. Conversely, a three-way fight could deliver all seven to the BJP.Seven seats may not count for much in the overall measure of things. But it would be a huge loss of face for the ruling party which won them all in 2014. Besides, the coming together of the AAP and the Congress would have also signaled an ideological unity in an election that is crucial to India's future as a secular democracy.Right till the very end - the evening of April 26 which was the last date of withdrawal of candidature - many Delhi voters kept their fingers crossed, clutching on to the hope that despite the bitter past between the AAP and Congress, the two would ultimately tango. That was not to be. The two parties failed to come to an understanding. Each side, unsurprisingly, blames the other. In the war of words that has broken out since the collapse of the putative alliance, Arvind Kejriwal has questioned the Congress's sincerity in fighting the BJP. The Congress, on the other hand, has accused the AAP of being overambitious and deliberately sabotaging the possibility of a united fight against the BJP.From afar, the Delhi imbroglio can come across as a classic case of petty egos and myopic politics coming in the way of a much needed unity to battle a bigger enemy. Many are deeply disappointed and frustrated that despite all those spectacles of "Opposition unity" over the past one year, parties fighting the BJP simply fail to come together when it matters the most, at the hustings.Yet, on closer analysis, the failure of the AAP and the Congress to work out a deal also offers an object lesson on the complexity of Indian politics and the continuous churn that simply cannot be constrained into a simple and neat binary. It is also a tale of generational conflict, between elderly uncle and cocky nephew if you will, neither willing to cede ground (entrenched versus newly acquired) despite a rampaging enemy at the door.Their competing narratives are compelling. The AAP may be the new kid on the Delhi block but it has good reasons to swagger. It came from nowhere, riding on the Anna Hazare-led "anti-corruption" movement in 2011 that took the national capital by storm. Kejriwal broke off from his avowedly apolitical guru to set up the Aam Aadmi Party next year. That gamble paid off.In the Delhi assembly elections, the fledgling party won as many as 28 seats in the 70-seat assembly. The BJP was only marginally ahead with 31 seats. The biggest loser was the Congress. Under Sheila Dikshit, the Congress had won three consecutive terms and transformed the city's infrastructure. But it was felled by the AAP wave, reduced to just eight seats in the assembly.Despite the Congress's ignominious defeat, the party decided to give conditional support to its new challenger in order to keep out the BJP. But the Kejriwal government, new to power and still enamoured by street politics, lasted just 49 days.In the Lok Sabha elections less than six months later, Delhi succumbed to the Modi wave. Kejriwal, with the inevitable confidence that comes to newly minted Davids against entrenched Goliaths, thought he would do to Modi what he had achieved against Sheila Dikshit. His foray into Varanasi proved a mistake. He lost by over three lakh votes. But it is to the credit of AAP that it did not let that misadventure curtail its zeal. Varanasi apart, the AAP was trounced in Delhi as well with the BJP sweeping up all seats in the city. But instead of retreating from the field, the young party invested its politics with that much more zest and enthusiasm. This gamble resulted in spectacular gains. In the February 2015 elections, the AAP's wave of 2013 turned into a tsunami. It won 67 of the 70 assembly seats with a vote share of 54.3 per cent. The BJP came a very remote second with three seats. The Congress got zero. With Delhi under its belt, the AAP acquired national ambitions. But its foray in Punjab failed to take off after showing some promise. It fared worse in other states it was eyeing - Haryana, Goa, Maharashtra. In Delhi itself, the 2017 municipal elections proved a dampener. The BJP won a giant's share of the local seats (181), with the AAP getting a mere 48 and the Congress 30. In terms of votes, Congress's near 22 per cent was not that dismal compared to the AAP's 26 per cent. The collapse of the AAP-Congress talks this month lies in this shifting narrative. The AAP is clearly the bigger force in Delhi. But the AAP wanted to leverage its strength in the capital to bargain for a larger footprint elsewhere. It initially wanted an electoral alliance with Congress in 33 seats spread over Punjab (13), Haryana (10), Delhi (7), Goa (2), and Chandigarh (1).AAP leaders admit that the Congress dismissed their demand for an alliance in Punjab and Goa out of hand. It was, they claim, willing to hold talks on 18 seats - Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh. The Congress denies this completely. It insists that Rahul Gandhi, who was particularly keen on an alliance with AAP, had authorized party functionaries to confine the deal to only Delhi. In Delhi, the Congress conceded that the AAP was stronger - and negotiated on a 4:3 deal, with four for AAP.The AAP's argument is that since the Congress got zero Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and followed that up with a bigger zero in the Delhi assembly polls in 2015, it was getting too great a share. The AAP was willing to be "generous only if it could leverage its clout in Delhi to make gains in Haryana and Chandigarh. In Haryana, it sought a tripartite deal between the Congress, the Jannayak Janata Party (floated by Dushyant Chautala) and itself on a 6:3:1 or even a 7:2:1 formula. The Congress saw no reason to give seats to the AAP (or the JJP) in a state where both are untested entities. The Congress's refusal to give up three or four seats in Haryana (where it won only one in 2014) may seem pointlessly cussed - especially if that concession could have secured a win-win deal in Delhi with the AAP.But the Congress, insiders insist, cannot abandon its own fort. It may not be the force it once was but every time it has conceded space to a newcomer to stave off encroachment of the BJP, it has lost ground forever. In 1996, P.V. Narasimha Rao was much too generous to the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh and the Congress has never recovered since. In the rest of north India (barring Uttar Pradesh and Bihar), the Congress still poses the biggest challenge to the BJP. To capitulate to the AAP's demand would mean the beginning of the end in Haryana and Delhi - and perhaps beyond. For those of us who would like to see a straight battle between the BJP and the "Opposition", the Delhi experience is distressing. Looked at more optimistically, it also suggests a multihued, multipronged response to a monolithic offensive. 1689156 1689098 DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Russia won't immediately raise oil output after Iran waivers end

But, he added, 'none of our partners, including Saudi Arabia, is withdrawing from our agreements within OPEC.' Saudi Arabia, the world's top crude exporter, has also said it had no immediate plans to raise oil output after the sanctions waivers end. There had been speculation that Riyadh could step in to plug the gap left by the removal of Iranian crude. Eight countries including China, India and Turkey had been given temporary waivers by the US when it reimposed sanctions on Iran last year. The end of the exemptions sparked fears of supply shortages, pushing prices to near six-month highs. UP Imam refuses to perform marriage as invite has image of Hindu gods

Ibadat Ali, an illiterate tailor, said being busy in marriage arrangements, he asked a fellow villager to get 250 invitations printed for him. Trouble began when he distributed the invites printed on a calendar like rectangular paper. The invite had the details of the marriage printed below a picture of Hindu deities Ram and his wife Sita. Ibadat said that he confirmed the design before it was printed. 'Almost all the marriage invitations in the village are printed in the same format. I never thought that it would land me in such trouble,' Ali said. When he approached the cleric to invite him on Saturday, the cleric rebuked him for having the picture of Hindu gods on the invite and refused to accept it. The cleric advised Ibadat to get another set of invites printed without the picture of the gods and apologise for his mistake. Ali agreed to apologise but expressed inability to get another set of cards printed. 'I don't have enough money. I have already spent almost all my savings on arrangements for the marriage,' Ali told HT. Rukhsar's would be in-laws also developed cold feet because of the issue, he added. On Sunday, he visited another Imam, Mohammad Imran to get his problem resolved. The Imam reiterated that he had made a mistake. 'Printing the images of gods is prohibited in our religion. However, as Ali and his family are illiterate, this mistake must be overlooked. I have asked him to apologise to the Almighty and go ahead with the preparations,' the Imam explained to HT on phone. He added that he would solemnise the marriage if their local cleric refused to do so. Meanwhile, Ali has received support from his fellow villagers over the issue. Village head Alok Mishra met Ali on Sunday and assured him of support. 'We have known Ali for decades and we will not let anybody spoil the marriage because of a picture. We will arrange a cleric from another area if the clerics here refuse to solemnise the marriage,' Mishra said. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Caption: Pic 1) The marriage invitation card. 2) The to be bride holding the marriage invite with her family. The big baddies of the comic world

He was reportedly inspired by Malcolm McDowell's mannerisms in A Clockwork Orange (1971), the Stanley Kubrick-directed masterpiece. The Joker's quirky character and crimes are based on the concept of fun, even though that fun may be sinister and dark. The Joker is intelligent, diabolical and sadistic and even when he gets caught and imprisoned, he remains calm, knowing he has the upper hand. Magneto "They wish to cure us. But I say to you we are the cure! The cure for that infirm, imperfect condition called "Homo sapiens!" They have their weapons. we have ours. We will strike with a vengeance and a fury that this world has never witnessed. And if any mutants stand in our way, we will use this poison against them!"Best portrayal: Ian McKellen, X-Men seriesSuperpowers: The ability to generate and control magnetic fieldsMagneto's character, like many others in the superhero world, is not etched out in black and white. His actions are dictated by the suffering he experienced as an adolescent during the Holocaust at Auschwit. It would be wrong to call Magneto insane, in the sense of not being criminally responsible. Films have tried to portray Magneto as a man who believes that direct action will save his people from annihilation, a sort of dark counterpart to Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart) who believes good examples and dialogue will save mutants. He regards mutants as superior to humans in terms of evolution and is against the idea of peaceful human-mutant co-existence. Loki"I ask only one thing in return, a good seat from which to watch Asgard burn".Best portrayal: Tom Hiddleston, Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Superpowers: Magic, energy projection and creation of force fields - Loki can do it all. To many, he is morally grey at best. Loki is a complex character but that doesn't necessarily make him a dangerous enemy. Within the MCU, he is looked at as a troubled but charismatic personality who is capable of deception. Loki's motivations, while extreme, are nuanced and complicated. There has never been anyone quite in the same league as this supervillain. He is human, with complex motives and methods that are evil, immoral, and unethical, but still understandable. They are the most hated people. We love to see them getting bashed up, but they have clearly evolved. From being the stereotypical bad guys, they are now giving their superhero nemeses a run for their money. With plots being tweaked around them, some supervillains now have a cult following, rubbing shoulders with superheroes in terms of sheer popularity. t2 lists some iconic supervillains that power some of the biggest superhero franchises.Bane "Ah, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me! I will show you where I have made my home while preparing to bring justice. Then I will break you".Best portrayal: Tom Hardy, The Dark Knight Rises (2012)Superpowers: He uses the super-steroid known as Venom to enhance his physical attributes to superhuman levels. Bane is smart enough to rival Batman. He had to learn to fight to survive, scoring his first kill at the age of 12. Bane is a driven and intelligent yet logical villain, who challenges Batman as well as tests him. He is a tricky character and though he's a genius, he's often presented as a brute. Even The Dark Knight Rises doesn't quite get Bane right, but it comes close in what is clearly director Nolan's take. Bane is the only Batman villain to ever defeat the caped crusader and is, in almost every way, a perfect foil to Batman. Thanos"Going to bed hungry, scrounging for scraps. Your planet was on the brink of collapse. I was the one who stopped that. You know what's happened since then? The children born have known nothing but full bellies and clear skies. It's a paradise".Best portrayal: Josh Brolin, Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Superpowers: Can project cosmic energy, is capable of telekinesis and telepathy. According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War belongs to Thanos. We couldn't agree more. Josh Brolin played the character to perfection, and in the process, immortalised the villain forever. Very few characters achieve iconic status riding on a single film, but Thanos did it in the "snap of a finger".His greatness lies in the fact that he strikes a chord with many of us. He thinks he is right, but he isn't. He dreams of a universe without suffering but goes to the extent of wiping out half the population (officially the highest body count for any villain, ever). A burgeoning population could put any planet/universe on the brink of extinction, but he chooses to go the wrong way for a right cause. His tragic flaw? Thanos tries to be God. Sri Lanka says Easter attack leader died in hotel bombing

hey said investigators had determined that the assailants' military training was provided by someone they called "Army Mohideen," and that weapons training had taken place overseas and at some locations in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province.Police also said that the attackers had worked out at a local gym and by playing soccer using their authentic national identity cards. They added that the vehicles used in the attack were purchased from a car dealership in Kadawatha, a suburb of Colombo, the capital. They said that the operator of a copper factory who was arrested in connection with the bombings had helped Mohideen make improvised explosive devices and purchase empty cartridges sold by the Sri Lankan military as scrap copper.Australia's prime minister said earlier Friday that it had been confirmed that the Sri Lanka attackers were supported by the Islamic State group, which has claimed responsibility for the massacre, distributing video of Zahran and others pledging allegiance to the withered caliphate.Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena told reporters in Colombo that some 140 people in the island nation had been identified as having links to the Islamic State group, and that the Sri Lankan government has "the capability "to completely control ISIS activities" in the country."We will completely control this and create a free and peaceful environment for people to live," he said.Sirisena blamed Sri Lanka's defence secretary, who resigned Thursday, and police chief, who he said would soon step down, for a failure to share weeks of information from international intelligence agencies about the plot ahead of time.Across Colombo, there was a visible increase of security as authorities warned of another attack and pursued suspects that could have access to explosives. Authorities had told Muslims to pray at home rather than attend communal Friday prayers that are the most important religious service for the faithful. At one mosque in Colombo where prayers were still held, police armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles stood guard outside.Armed soldiers also stood guard outside St. Anthony's Shrine, one of the three churches attacked on Easter.Gration Fernando crossed himself when he looked at the church after walking out of his shop there. Fernando says he, like other Sri Lankans, was worried about further attacks. There is "no security, no safety to go to church," he said, adding that "now children are scared to go to church" as well.Late on Thursday, Sri Lanka's health ministry drastically revised down its estimated death toll from the coordinated attacks. A statement said "approximately" 253 people had died, nearly one-third lower than the police's estimated the death toll of 359.The discrepancy was not immediately explained, but it fits a pattern of claims and counterclaims by Sri Lankan officials that have muddled the investigation. In a predominantly Muslim area of Colombo's Maligawatta neighbourhood, vegetable sellers laid their produce on the sidewalks near the mosques as women in long black chador shopped.Leaders at the neighbourhood mosques said they planned still to hold Friday noon prayers. They said both the police and volunteers would be guarding the neighbourhood to protect the faithful.Imtiyas Ahamed, one prayer leader, said he planned to preach about how extremists like the Islamic State group were not faithful Muslims."In Islam, it is not said to kill yourself and kill others," Ahamed said.As he spoke, men one at a time came into the mosque to pray. They sat on their knees and bowed toward Mecca, the sweat from their brows falling on the mosque's purple-and-grey carpet.Abdullah Mohammed, 48, another Muslim from the neighbourhood, stood outside."Everyone is nervous," Mohammed said. "Not just the Muslims. Buddhists, Christians, Hindus - everybody's nervous."Ahamed also urged people not to think all of Sri Lanka's Muslims were like the people who carried out Sunday's attacks."After the New Zealand attack, we don't think every white Australian is an extremist," he said. Avengers Endgame movie review: A spectacular send-off

Having laboured over setting up the final battle in Infinity War, Directors Anthony and Joe Russo get their act together to give a proper, emotional, funny and, yes, even spectacular, send-off to a cast of characters we have come to know (and, mostly love) over 22 films and 10 years. Where they seemed to be having trouble tracking the many heroes, and superheroes, and justifying their pay grade and presence last time, the Russos find a way to hold it all together now — though, admittedly, they have fewer heads than in Infinity War given that Thanos had made many vanish. Still, when the storyline seems to be getting out of hand — as tales involving time travel, quantum physics, and infinity stones can invariably do — the Russos with commendable clarity reel it back in. There is pathos in levity here and levity in pathos, with writers Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (who have many Avenger films on their resume) tackling love, fatherhood, motherhood and parenthood with a light touch which would do even better films proud. It also ultimately gives us a great villain in Thanos — brilliantly performed in motion-capture by Josh Brolin. A villain convinced not just of the motivations of his own villainy but also that it may just be a set piece in the larger endgame of the universe — in his words, a man like him, believing in and triggering the cycle of extinction and renewal, for continuum, is 'inevitable'. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, let's just say it's fraught with risk where Endgame chooses to meet him — though expected given the pensive ending of Infinity War — and how it sets up the clash this time. Avengers Endgame movie review and release LIVE UPDATES setTimeout(function(){(function(id){var embedTag=document.getElementById(id).children[0]; if(embedTag){var width=embedTag.offsetWidth; var height=embedTag.offsetHeight; embedTag.height=document.body.offsetWidth * (height/width); embedTag.width=document.body.offsetWidth;}})("embed-quint-brightcove-iframe-tag-0");},1000); Choosing the path it does, allows Endgame to flash back to the many high points of this franchise's 22 films, set up some great encounters, show the evolution of its characters right from the first threads of their spandex suits, and underline the camaraderie that is ultimately the greatest strength of this bursting-at-the-seams cast. Iron Man a.k.a Tony (Downey Jr) gets to settle his father issues, Captain America aka Steve (Evans) to have a shot at a normal life, Thor to choose between being god and man, Hulk aka Bruce to make peace with both his brain and brawn (though Ruffalo is Ruffalo, and sorely missed in his new green mass), Hawkeye aka Barton (Renner) acknowledges his feelings for Black Widow aka Natasha (Johansson), while the latter learns about her dad and has one of the most profound moments in the film, while just eating a sandwich. Of the main people this time, only Ant-Man aka Scott (Rudd) doesn't impress. Starting with Downey Jr and Evans, the actors put their heart and soul into the goings-on, even when the film gets incredulous over its 3-hour-plus length and sags, like in Infinity War, in the real bang-for-the-buck bits. However, the clear winner hands down is Hemsworth as Thor, now with straggly hair and a paunch, who has let himself go in the years following Thanos's destruction of the world, wallowing in self-pity and beer. Hemsworth has time and again proved that he is the actor with the best comic touch here (forgive us thou Chris Pratt fans), and it is to him that the best line of the film is devoted — when Thor, top undressed and trousers hanging below his bulging stomach, demands to know what is wrong with how he looks, Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) says, 'You look like melted ice-cream.' There are other nice lines here, about failure and finding oneself, about 'ending being part of the story of a hero's gig', about 'no amount of money buying you a second of time', about the choice between freedom and control, about the things that are better left alone (a Wakandan on an earthquake under the ocean), and about even time travel ('either all of it is a joke or none of it is)' — though some of it might sound less brilliant in retrospect. And there is an ambitious but pleasing passing-of-the-baton here — with women (probably, maybe) hinted at playing a larger role in the films to come. Till then, go with the thought that in a roomful of men struggling to pay attention as six infinity stones are traced across space, time and quantum realm, Natasha knows what is required — she takes notes. Nimbleness - not surrender - should inform India's strategic thinking

Nearly 11 per cent of India's imports of crude oil were from Iran, even though it was apparent that New Delhi was scaling down its purchases in recent times. In a bid to cover a bloodied nose, the powers-that-be have sought to describe India's decision as 'practical', assuring the nation that alternative sources would be explored to mitigate the impact of the blow on India's oil market. But the reality, allegedly, is far from reassuring. The benefits accrued from Iranian imports were considerable: an extended credit period, relatively low pricing and minimal insurance. India's kowtowing to the US would also leave New Delhi vulnerable to retaliation from Tehran. Iranian restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz - a critical corridor for global oil shipping - can have a deleterious effect. It must also be borne in mind that India has invested heavily in the Chabahar port project, which, New Delhi hopes, would improve its access to Central Asia. The pitfalls of India's capitulation may not be limited to the commercial sphere. Iran and India have shared a partnership that is both historical and mutually beneficial. While it is true that the strategic implications of a direct confrontation with the US could be significant, it must also be acknowledged that taking inflexible positions in the context of a region as unpredictable as West Asia does not say much about India's diplomatic foresight. Nimbleness - not surrender - should inform India's strategic thinking. Could there then be a case for India working with the other nations - China is among them - adversely affected by the US's embargo? That could pave the way for a formidable alliance, which is unlikely to remain hostage to the whims of an influential nation. Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Misa Yadav, Ram Kripal file nominations from Patliputra seat

Misa, who would be trying her luck for the second time from Patliputra, started from 10, Circular Road and reached collectorate to file the nomination. The long fleet of vehicles and her motorcycleborne supporters in her roadshow created jam on Patna roads, causing much inconvenience to commuters, who had to bear the sweltering heat in the snarl up. Misa said that she missed her father and therefore decided to carry his picture with her. 'I am confident that people will support and vote for me. I will win from Patliputra,' she added. Lok Sabha Elections 2019: All you need to know about Bihar BJP leader RamKripal Yadav going to file his nomination from Patliputra Constituency, Thursday, April 25,2019. ( AP Dube / HT Photo ) Sitting MP from Patliputra constituency Ram Kripal Yadav before filing nomination papers reached Mahavir Mandir near Patna Junction along with his supporters. After offering prayers at the temple, Yadav held a roadshow to reach collectorate where he filed the nomination papers. Talking to media, Yadav, too, expressed confidence that he would win with a huge margin. Yadav had broken ties with RJD in 2014 after Misa was given ticket from the party. He had then joined BJP and defeated Misa by a margin of 40,322 votes in the LS polls. From Ara, Raju Yadav of CPI-ML filed papers with a massive support of Grand Alliance leaders, including Barhara RJD MLA Saroj Yadav, VIP chief Mukesh Sahni, HAM-S president Jitan Ram Manjhi, RJD leaders Shivanand Tiwari and Jagdanand Singh besides others. GA is supporting CPI-ML candidate in Ara. Before filing of nomination, the leaders addressed a gathering at Ara's Ramna maidan and attacked BJP for giving ticket to Pragya Singh Thakur from Bhopal. CPI-ML national general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said despite being accused in Malegaon blast, Pragya was allotted ticket. He also attacked chief minister Nitish Kumar for joining hands with BJP. He said after defeat of NDA all efforts would be made to grant bail to Lalu Prasad and CPI-ML activists who were imprisoned under TADA. Others who addressed the gathering were Mukesh Sahni, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Congress leaders DP Tripathi and Shashwat Gautam, RJD leaders Shivanand Tiwari and Jagdanand Singh, Raju Yadav, RJD MLA Vijendra Yadav and Tarari MLA and CPI-ML leader Sudama Prasad. Former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav could not reach Ara due to technical snag in his helicopter at Dehrion-sone. Here are 10 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies you must watch before Avengers: Endgame

Guardians of the GalaxyAbout: We were introduced to a new group of superheroes -Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax The Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot - a band of former intergalactic outlaws who teamed up to protect the galaxy from interplanetary threats.Reason to watch: This was the first movie that showed us how the six Infinity Stones came into existence and how powerful they really are. The movie reveals Thanos's relationship with his adopted daughters Gamora and Nebula, and their hatred towards him. Captain America: The First AvengerAbout: Set in 1942, we see the journey of Steve Rogers as he is drafted in the US Army. Enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum, he learns how to use his new-found powers to fight the Axis powers and the Hydra in the Second World War and recovers the Tesseract or Space Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones.Reason to watch: It introduces us to the Space Stone and also establishes why Captain America is highly respected among the Avengers, establishing him as a long-term leader. Captain MarvelAbout: It takes us to the unseen period of the MCU. We follow the journey of Carol Danvers, a former US Air Force pilot, who goes on to become one of the universe's most powerful superheroes after being caught in the midst of an intergalactic battle. Reason to watch: It is not just her strength but also her knowledge of the forces operating in the universe that will make her very crucial to the Avengers's final fight against Thanos. According to Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Captain Marvel will lead the future generation of the Avengers. Ant-Man and The WaspAbout: The film is a direct sequel to 2015's Ant-Man and follows the events of Captain America: Civil War. Scott Lang is under house arrest after his involvement in the violations of the Sokovia Accords. He dons the Ant-Man suit to rescue Janet Van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, along with the Wasp. This mission soon leads to this dynamic duo fighting an epic battle against a powerful new enemy, The Ghost.Reason to watch: This movie is a direct link between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game and hints how Quantum Realm will play an important role in saving the earth. Not to forget the 'Time Vortex' mentioned in the end credits scene which will probably play a significant role in Endgame, as suggested by the trailers. The AvengersAbout: This film features the coming together of iconic Marvel superheroes - Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow - that we had all had been waiting for. They fought as a team to stop Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.Reason to watch: Not only was this movie the culmination of the previous MCU films, it also showed us what to expect in the future Marvel films - stronger enemies and more action. Not to forget that this was the first movie in the MCU where the infamous Mad Titan, Thanos, made his appearance in one of the end credit scenes. Thor: RagnarokAbout: Set two years after the Battle of Sokovia, Thor is imprisoned and trapped on the alien planet Sakaar by Surtur. Thor tries to escape just in time to save Asgard from Hela, the goddess of death, and Ragnarok.Reason to watch: We find that Odin's death was what Thanos was waiting for before attacking earth. This film also sees the destruction of Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor, and the introduction of the Stormbreaker, his new weapon. Moreover, Thor meets Hulk during his time in Sakaar which his explains absence in Captain America: Civil War. Captain America: Civil WarAbout: A deep rift developed in the team of superheroes, with them being divided as those who honoured the Sokovia Accords, led by Iron Man, and those who did not, led by Captain America. This resulted in a hero-versus-hero battle.Reason to watch: With the S.H.I.E.L.D. dissolved previously and now the Avengers broken up, the world lacks a powerful force to protect it from the cosmic threats. The separation of the Avengers in the film sets the tone for the upcoming films in MCU, right up to Endgame. Iron ManAbout: Iron Man follows the story of multi-millionaire industrialist and master engineer Tony Stark who designs and builds an exoskeleton and becomes the most technologically advanced superhero.Reason to watch: The film that kicked off one of the most iconic superhero franchises in history is a must-watch before Endgame. While not much will be revisited from this movie, it establishes Tony Stark as one of the most important Avengers. Avengers: Infinity WarAbout: The fractured Avengers partially reunite and fight Thanos, who's out to collect the six Infinity Stones and eradicate half the universe. A host of Avengers have also fallen prey to Thanos's finger snap.Reason to watch: It took a snap that wiped out half the universe to finally bring all the Avengers together. Seeing the Avengers assemble once again to fight off a menace reminds us of the first Avengers movie, and since Endgame will begin from right where Infinity War ends, it makes perfect sense to watch it before Endgame. Misa waves family unity and Lalu's picture

He has been implicated by people who are out to destroy the country and the Constitution," Misa said.Misa, named so by Lalu Prasad as a protest against the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) the then Indira Gandhi government at the Centre had passed in 1971, said people were "aware about the injustice against her father and were discussing it day and night". "They will take revenge for it in this Lok Sabha election," she added.Lalu Prasad has been jailed after being convicted in fodder scam cases and is now lodged in a Ranchi hospital in Jharkhand because of health issues. The RJD chief's eldest daughter also spoke about her family's unity, though younger brother Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was away campaigning in Munger, Begusarai, Rohtas and Ara.The family has seen a virtual rebellion in recent times, with Tej Pratap voicing his resentment over not being accorded importance in party affairs and being forced to play second-fiddle to Tejashwi."My mother is unwell, yet she came for my nomination. My brother Tej Pratap is campaigning for my victory in the absence of my father. They have shown that our family is united. There are people who wish the disintegration of our family, because we have been raising the voice of the downtrodden. The people of Bihar are going to give them a befitting reply," Misa said.Tej Pratap echoed his sister. "Those who want to shout slogans against my family are free to do so, but we will defeat them. Misadidi is a lioness and she will certainly win from Patliputra," he said.Misa addressed a public meeting at Shivala Chowk in the Khagaul area of Patliputra after filing her papers. Brother Tejashwi too reached the venue to make up for his absence when Misa filed her nomination. Misa had contested from Patliputra in 2014 but lost by around 40,000 votes to Ram Kripal Yadav, now a Union minister. Ram Kripal, a former RJD leader, was a close confidant of Lalu Prasad but left the party and joined the BJP after being denied a ticket.Ram Kripal too filed his nomination papers for Patliputra on Thursday after a road show. "I have worked impartially for the people of Patliputra for the last five years. On the other hand, the RJD is a family's party. The people understand this. They defeated the family party in the previous polls and will do so this time too," he said.Upendra Kushwaha, Rashtriya Lok Samta Party leader and a former Union minister, filed his papers at the Rohtas collectorate as a candidate from the Karakat Lok Sabha seat. He later addressed a public rally in the area at which Tejashwi and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar were present. Sri Lanka Muslims, refugees fear backlash from Easter attack

ctivists say some Muslim youths have disappeared, perhaps arrested by tight-lipped security forces, while others stay at home, fearful the bombings will spark retaliation from either the government or angry mobs in a nation where inter-religious violence can strike."The people in Pakistan attacked us and say we're not Muslims," said Tariq Ahmed, a 58-year-old Ahmadi who fled his home. "Then in Sri Lanka, people attack us because they say we are Muslims."Sunday's coordinated suicide bombings targeted three churches and three hotels, killing about 250 people, Sri Lanka's health ministry said late on Thursday. The death toll was revised down from previous police estimates of 359 people. Authorities have blamed a local group, National Towheed Jamaat, previously only known for vandalising Buddhist statues and the extremist online sermons of its leader, alternately named Mohammed Zahran or Zahran Hashmi. But by Tuesday, the Islamic State group had asserted it carried out the assault, bolstering its claim by publishing images of Zahran and others pledging loyalty to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.The Ahmadi Muslims say the harassment only grew more amplified in the days after the attack, fuelled by a mistaken sense that since they came from Pakistan, they too must be like the extremists. But the Ahmadi themselves have fled decades of persecution in Pakistan. Ahmadis believe another Islamic prophet, Ahmad, appeared in the 19th century, a view at odds with the fundamental Islamic principle that Muhammad was the final messenger sent by God.Pakistan changed its constitution in 1974 to declare Ahmadis non-Muslims. Ten years later, the government declared it a criminal offence for Ahmadis to "pose as Muslims". They are forbidden from calling their places of worship mosques and cannot sound the call to prayer. Like other religious minorities, they can face blasphemy laws that carry the death penalty, sometimes used by neighbours in petty disputes to target them."We are not their enemies. We are facing the same situation these people are facing," said Qazi Moin Ahmed, 21. "We are not terrorists, but they consider us terrorists."Tension grew quickly in Negombo after Sunday's bombing, which left dozens dead at St Sebastian's Church. Ahmadi Muslims described being pulled out of tuk-tuks, hit with sticks or pelted with stones. Others said mobs sometimes broke into homes, while others said their Christian landlords, the police or soldiers helped bring them to safety. Now, police and soldiers protect the Ahmadi mosque in Negombo, while policeman an under-construction Ahmadi community centre in Pasyala, where some 500 other Ahmadis had been based.Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe acknowledged the attacks the Ahmadis faced during an interview on Thursday night with the AP and said authorities would work to ensure their safety. Some in Negombo "had become suspicious of foreigners, not of Muslims per se," he said. "In the heat of the moment, a few have been attacked."Nearly all the Ahmadis came to Sri Lanka with hopes of being resettled elsewhere in the world by UNHCR.Babar Baloch, a UNHCR spokesman, told the AP the agency had received word from refugees that they "have been the targets of threats and intimidation," and that efforts continued to make sure they were safe. Some 1,600 refugees and asylum seekers are registered with UNHCR in Sri Lanka, he said."UNHCR is working closely with local and national authorities who have been very supportive and helpful to ensure the security and safety of all refugees and asylum-seekers during this time of heightened anxiety and concern," Baloch said. The concern extends beyond just the Ahmadi, however. There has been religious violence previously between faiths in Sri Lanka. So far, police have conducted raids and made arrest, but have been careful not to identify suspects or areas perhaps out of the fear of stoking more anger. But even as mosques hang banners supporting the government and denouncing the attack, activists say some Muslim youth have been disappeared, likely detained by authorities.Alaina Teplitz, the US ambassador to Sri Lanka, said she had heard of similar reports."I think those concerns are legitimate in the sense of wanting to make sure there is no overreach given past history," Teplitz said, referring to the abuses of Sri Lanka's 26-year civil war against Tamil Tiger rebels. The situation remains tense in Pasyala, hundreds of men catch what sleep they can outside on the patchy grass near the community centre. Women and children live inside. At breakfast on Thursday, the community prepared a lentil soup for those displaced. Men sat cross-legged on a long blue tarp, sopping up the soup with hunks of bread shared from a metal cauldron.Tariq Ahmed returned to a journalist with his mobile phone. On the line was his worried sister, Bushra Bedum, who lives in Virginia."I am very happy before because I thought he was he was safe there, but now I am frightened," she said. "What can I do?" World Malaria Day 2019: Early signs, symptoms, causes and theme

If these symptoms are not treated within 24 hours, they can lead to serious illness and death. Children suffering from this illness may develop severe anaemia, respiratory distress or cerebral malaria. Adults who have malaria could experience multi-organ failure. Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to curb the spread of this disease. Theme for World Malaria Day 2019: World Malaria Day is observed to increase awareness about this disease. Dr. Tedros, Director General of WHO described the theme of this year by saying ''Globally, the world has made incredible progress against malaria. But we are still too far from the end point we seek a world free of malaria. Every year, the global tally of new malaria cases exceeds 200 million. And every 2 minutes, a child dies from this preventable and treatable disease. The damage inflicted extends far beyond the loss of life: malaria takes a heavy toll on health systems, sapping productivity and eroding economic growth. Ultimately, investing in universal health care is the best way to ensure that all communities have access to the services they need to beat malaria. Individual and community empowerment through grassroots initiatives like 'Zero malaria starts with me' can also play a critical role in driving progress.' A couple of days off for Kolkata Knight Riders players

he media statement added: "A few of the players felt they could get a better practice session in Mumbai. These players will be rejoining the rest of the team on Wednesday."Around 9pm, Knight Riders's CEO Venky Mysore replied to a text message from The Telegraph on the same issue. Mysore, from Mumbai, wrote: "Everyone has been given a couple of days off, some have come to Mumbai for sponsor commitments and will practise here (in Mumbai) on Tuesday. Everyone will be back in Calcutta on Wednesday and will be present at the practice session at the Eden." If the case is that simple, that the team has been given time off, probably to iron out the issues that have been plaguing them, it is difficult to understand what the initial secrecy was all about. Also, though the CEO speaks about sponsor commitments in Mumbai, the media statement that was issued on behalf of the team management earlier didn't mention that and instead said that some of the players felt that they could get a better practice session in Mumbai. Andre Russell, however, returned to Calcutta. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Morocco is a trove of Jewish history if you know where to go

Today, after vast waves of departures over the years, only about 2,000 Jews remain in Casablanca and about 500 elsewhere in Morocco, but the Jewish presence is still alive in a variety of sights. The Museum of Moroccan Judaism in suburban Casablanca, for instance, is the only museum on Judaism in the Arab world. Jews of Moroccan descent, in Israel and around the globe, return to the North African kingdom often and some maintain second homes in familial regions. Jewish heritage tours to Morocco are abundant and easy to track down. Most cities have a mellah, which is an old Jewish quarter, along with Jewish cemeteries and synagogues. Mittelman, who has spent 40 years absorbing the history, culture and religious practices of Jews in Morocco, leads groups of students on tours of Jewish sights as part of an advanced seminar. He said there's plenty to read ahead of a visit. He recommends Shlomo Dessen's 'The Mellah Society: Jewish Community Life in Sherifian Morocco' for more on pre-colonial Morocco, based on the writings of 18th- and 19th-century Judeo-Moroccan sages. To learn more about the spiritual history of the Jewish quarter in Marrakech, he recommends the travelogue of Bulgarian Jewish writer Elias Canetti, 'The Voices of Marrakesh: A Record of a Visit.' Mittelman has honed his travel itineraries over the years. Here are some of his favourites and other sights: CASABLANCA The last Moroccan Jewish day school, Neve Shalom, is in Casablanca, which is the economic and business center of the kingdom. Ask for Principal Jacky Sebbag. the children playing outside in the yard, enjoy them singing Jewish songs and learn more about the school's Hebrew classes and Bible studies, Mittelman said. Visit the Tahiti Beach Club, once a local Jewish hangout. Among Mittelman's walking tours of Jewish residential areas in Casablanca are stops at the Beth El and Eim Habanim synagogues. There's also a newer synagogue, David Ha-Melech, in the tony, beachside Corniche quarter not far from the beach club. Casablanca has a traditional kosher bakery and kosher restaurants, as do other cities. The city is a good place to start for a grounding in Jewish heritage and history. MARRAKECH Just over 100 Jews remain in Marrakech, including a handful who live in the old Jewish quarter, Mittelman said, but the mellah is bustling. Among the synagogues that remain is the tiny blue-and-white Lazama, along a narrow street. Ask a local how to find it. Visitors may enter for a small fee. There's an inviting riad-style courtyard with a fruit tree and a few chairs for weary travellers. The original synagogue dated to 1492 but it was later rebuilt. The synagogue's Torah scrolls were written on gazelle parchment, according to the synagogue's Muslim guide. Visitors can have a look at Lazama's mikveh, the traditional Jewish ritual bath down some winding stone steps. The mellah isn't the only place for synagogues. Head to the city's newer section of Gueliz, with a heavy European influence, for shabbat services at Temple Beth El Synagogue. Any taxi driver should know how to get there. Two hours south of Marrakech is a little town called Anouim, where the mysterious rabbi and healer Wazana once lived. For another day trip out of Marrakech visit the Jewish heritage sites at Essaouira, once a thriving Jewish center and a former Portuguese fishing town. It was also a stop for 1960s and '70s rock stars who made pilgrimages to Marrakech. The town, dating to the 1700s, has a synagogue, cemetery and mellah, with plaques indicating buildings where ancient, long-gone synagogues once stood. A particular highlight for Mittelman is the Tomb of the Sainted Rabbi, Haim ben Diwan, just over an hour south of Marrakech. Jews still gather at the spot in the high Atlas Mountains in the village of Tagadirt n'Bour near Anrhaz for a traditional 'hiloula' celebration of his life. Mittelman leads groups up a hill for a picnic near the tomb. 'It's our little pilgrimage spot. You see mountains all around you and you hear wind going through the mountains. Sensually it's an incredible experience,' he said. FES The city had a large Jewish community in the 17th century and has a well-known Orthodox synagogue, Ibn Danan. Once crumbling, it was refurbished in the 1990s with help from the World Monuments Fund and American Express. King Mohammad VI has committed to reviving Jewish sites around Morocco. The mellah here is a maze within walls. You WILL get lost and that's half the fun. It was the first mellah in Morocco, dating to around 1438. In addition to a Jewish cemetery, where a couple of eminent medieval rabbis are buried, there's a site in Fes that is considered sacred among women, the Tomb of Solika. With a last name that varies, Solika — as one retelling goes — was a Jewish woman of great beauty who was beheaded in 1834 for refusing to convert to Islam. Maimonides, one of the most prolific and influential Torah scholars in the Middle Ages, lived in Fes from 1159 to 1165. His stone home, with weathered engraving marking the location, is worth a stop. Walk a few steps and you're bound to find somebody willing to guide you in Fes and elsewhere, but one who knows 'Jewish Morocco' is harder to come by, Mittelman said. Do some research beforehand to find just the right drivers and guides if you're travelling independently. OFF THE BEATEN PATH If you favour this style of travelling, Mittelman said you should have no trouble in small towns and villages tracking Jewish influences and history. 'Find yourself the first 80-year-old and say, 'Do you remember Jews here?' Chances are they'll say, 'Yeah and here are their names and that crumbling house over there is where they used to live.'' Telugu Desam failed to protect temple lands: YSRC

There is no proper explanation as to why proper police security was not provided to the van. Mr Naidu, who has been reviewing various departments, though he is only a caretaker Chief Minister, surprisingly did not react on the issue.' 'There has been lot of irregularities in the TTD and we demand an inquiry on the transport of the gold, which should be made public. There has been nepotism in the appointments to top positions of TTD and the loot has been going on systematically. In the first place, chief priest Ramana Deekshitulu was set aside and someone from the north was brought in as the EO,' he said. 'Finance minister's kin was appointed to the high office and the irregularities continued,' Mr Reddy said. 'Earlier, the golden crowns of Govindaraja Swamy Temple was looted and nothing has been forthcoming and efforts were made to shield the main culprits and make some small fry into scapegoats. The Investigation Officers (IOs) are aware of the houses where the crowns are hidden and where to search, but they are silent,' he added. 'There was a controversy over the excavations in Tirumala and the Naidu Government has been maintaining secrecy. There has been no protection to temples and places of worship under TD rule. Many Temples, Churches and Mosques were demolished with the promise to rebuild them but the promise was not fulfilled,' Mr Reddy said. Sadavarthi temple lands were sold at throw away price and the need to sell them was not mentioned anywhere, he said. 'There are more skeletons that would tumble from the cupboard in the days to come on the corrupt deeds of the TD Government,' Mr Reddy said. Replying to a question, he said that they were only complaining as and when there were serious violations of the Model Code of Conduct by the TD leaders and the Chief Minister and will continue to do so. ...
